Governor of South Australia Inspires Future Leaders at Loreto College Marryatville
Loreto College Marryatville was honoured to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia, as part of her initiative to engage with high school students across the state. The visit aimed to connect directly with Loreto College students, understand their aspirations and concerns, and encourage them in their pursuit of goals.
During her address, Her Excellency spoke about ambitions and challenges faced by young women today. She posed thought-provoking questions to the students including: “What might you be the first woman to do?” This question resonated with more than 700 Reception to Year 12 students in attendance, who reflected deeply on their own potential and future possibilities.
Her Excellency also presented bravery awards to sisters Scarlett and Rose Faye for their quick thinking in providing CPR to their grandmother, an act that saved her life.
The visit concluded with a morning tea at the Performing Arts Centre, where Her Excellency engaged in an informal conversation with students on a range of topics from leadership and career choices to community involvement and world affairs.
The event was also attended by Ms. Georgia Minucci, Protocol Officer and Loreto Old Scholar, who accompanied Her Excellency.
Loreto College Marryatville emphasises the importance of civic and citizenship education through various initiatives, including:
- Canberra Trip: An educational tour where students visit the Senate and House of Representatives, learn about the legislative process, and explore the contributions of successful female figures in Australia’s history and present.
- Old Scholar Achievements: Celebrating Old Scholar Heidi Girolamo, a member of the Legislative Council, as a role model for students.
- National Recognition: Mr. Paul Foley, leader of humanities, has been awarded the National History Award, underscoring the school’s commitment to academic excellence.
- Social Justice Initiatives: Students from Reception to Year 12 actively participate in social justice projects, such as Pink and Green Day, Mission Day, and fundraising and volunteering for international pilgrimages to Vietnam, Cambodia, and India.
